An Implicit Bias is an unconscious (whether positive or negative) mental attitude toward a person, object, or group. New scientific research is documenting that we all are influenced by these unconscious biases and they can dictate our behavior without our approval or even awareness. Our team has partnered with a nationally certified Implicit Bias trainer who will train a small group of subject matter experts who have direct contact with the young people we serve such as teachers, judges, public defenders, detention officers and probation officers. After the completion of this training, these subject matter experts will engage in the development of scenario-based curriculum of their area of expertise that will be later shared across the state.
Data has proven that in Florida our largest disproportionality occurs in school-based arrest. Further dissection into that data revealed the specific age at which those school-based arrest increases significantly. Through collaboration with NOBLE’S (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives) North Florida chapter, School Districts and local Law Enforcement agencies within circuit 2 this pilot program was created. Focusing on 7th grade civics classes at the four schools with the highest number of school-based arrest over the past three years, NOBLE officers conducted a 45-minute hands-on, interactive presentation designed to improve student communication and relationships with law enforcement officers.
The Florida State Advisory Group’s DMC Sub-committee challenged multiple circuits to create scripts on specific topics to raise a greater awareness to RED/DMC across the state. These scripts will be transformed into RED/DMC Vignettes that will be shared across the state of Florida. Topics include “Ways RED and DMC impacts today’s youth”, “Causes of RED/DMC” and “Define RRI: Relative Rate Index, and ways DJJ of Florida uses RRI to track RED and DMC throughout the state.” Once scripts have been finalized, the committee will solicit state level leaders and officials to serve as the on camera faces to champion behind this important initiative.
