The Charles Britt Academy serves 28 males, ages 14 to 18, who are in need of substance abuse treatment services in a non-secure residential commitment program.  Substance Abuse Treatment Overlay Services (SAOS) are provided for youth with a diagnosed substance related disorder and functional impairment associated with substance abuse or substance dependence.  The youth may also have a co-occurring mental disorder, but the substance abuse must be the primary disorder.

The goals of the program are to create a trauma-focused restraint-free environment, provide comprehensive medical, mental health and substance abuse treatment services and implement evidenced based and promising practices.

The anticipated average length of stay depends on the youth's pace of success in completing the individualized treatment plan and goals.

The Pinellas County Public School System provides general academic instruction for the youth at Charles Britt Academy.  Vocational programming also is offered and includes pre-vocational services that identify the youths’ interests, aptitudes and skills as well as classes focusing on print and silk screening, culinary arts, computing for college and career and horticulture.

The program offers GED® preparation.

The Charles Britt Academy is a Type 2 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and one elective course. The elective course is typically used to provide additional reading assistance to needy students or vocational training.

Education and vocational services are provided through the Pinellas County School District.
