DJJ Probation Leader to be Honored for “Service of Excellence”

For immediate release:

Tallahassee, Fla. -- Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Chief Probation Officer RaiEtte Avael has been selected to receive the 2011 Department of Children and Families (DCF) Service of Excellence Award for Circuit 16/Monroe County.

Avael is one of 20 circuit award recipients who will be honored in September at the annual DCF Dependency Summit. DCF Secretary David Wilkins will present the awards at the opening session.

"This is a great and well-deserved honor," said Secretary Wansley Walters. "Chief Avael has a distinguished and inspiring record of service to Florida’s troubled youth and their families. She is an asset to the DJJ team and to the public she serves."

During her 33 years of public service, Avael has received many awards. In June, she received the President’s Call to Service Award, which is the highest level of the U.S. President's Volunteer Award for service and civic participation.

In addition to her duties as chief probation officer, Avael serves as chair of the Monroe Community Based Care Alliance, the Monroe Coalition, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Planning Council and the Monroe County Substance Abuse Policy Advisory Committee. She also serves on the executive committees of the South Florida Behavioral Health Network (serving Circuits 11 and 16), the Southernmost Homeless Assistance League, the Monroe County Criminal Justice Mental Health & Substance Abuse Diversion Committee and the Guidance Care Center Community Council, and as a member of the Children's Movement.

DCF Service of Excellence Award recipients were chosen in each circuit by local community based care organizations, judges and DCF regional directors. Criteria for selection specified individuals who interact directly with children and families, and are known for their selfless, inspiring and transformative service within their communities.
