Local Youth Given Investment Awards in "Completion Ceremony"

Celebration part of DJJ Youth Success Week

For immediate release:

Tallahassee -- Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Secretary Frank Peterman, Jr., joined Florida Juvenile Justice Foundation (FJJF) Chair Marjorie Turnbull, and Kim Moore, CEO of Workforce Plus for Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla Counties, to present more than 20 youth with Leon Strengthening Youth Partnership/FJJF Youth Investment Awards. The criteria for the awards were completion of work-readiness training, on-the-job training and parenting education.

"I want to congratulate these young men and women," said DJJ Secretary Frank Peterman, Jr. "I have great hope for them. And I want to thank our partners, who are giving them the help they need to achieve a brighter future."

The Florida Juvenile Justice Foundation, the Eckerd Family Foundation, Visions of Manhood, and Workforce Plus joined together as the Leon Strengthening Youth Partnership to provide training for the youth. The effort, which was fully underwritten by the Eckerd Family Foundation, required completion of classes modeled after the Shared Youth Vision curriculum of the U.S. Department of Labor.

"Thanks to the willingness of the Eckerd Family Foundation to work with the Florida Juvenile Justice Foundation, we are able to assist court-involved youth across the state through the Youth Investment Award," said FJJF Chairman Marjorie Turnbull. "We so appreciate the Eckerd Family Foundation for this pilot project opportunity."

The Youth Investment Award is a pilot program for youth-in-transition, assisting individuals aged 15 to 25 years served by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, and is administered by the FJJF. A youth may apply for education or employability assistance when that need cannot be met through any other available resource and is essential to the youth’s success. This may include tuition, equipment, supplies, transportation, education or employability assistance. To support this initiative or for more information, please visit http://www.djjfoundation.org.

The Leon Strengthening Youth Partnership/FJJF Youth Investment Awards "Completion Ceremony" coincides with the closing celebrations of the Annual DJJ Youth Success Week, Part of the Community, Part of the Solution. The week highlights the success of at-risk youth in turning their lives around, and the community partners who support their accomplishments.
